In case you were wondering...

In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

Two Days' Work

More progress!

This is the bead board ceiling almost in place--we'll paint it white to maximize light and to cover the lumberyard's markings on the rafters...

The outdoor storage is taking shape; ceiling's about half on here.

The lumberyard delivered the rigid tongue-and-groove insulation and the metal roofing just as Mark was ready for it! It really looked bright out there when he got all the insulation on...call me goofy, but I'm glad it was the blue stuff instead of the pink. Other than breast cancer awareness, I'm not much of a pink person!

Obviously, it's a lot darker inside with a roof!
Gotta find another window for that back wall...

And now, Saturday, most of the roof is in place...

I didn't expect anything much to get done today, but I'd misunderstood Mark--he came this morning shortly after we got back from the cabin, to try to get as much of the metal roof on as he could before the skies opened again...

We chose metal roofing for a number of reasons--partly because I've lived with it at the cabin for 20+ years and it seems to be almost indestructible unless a tree falls on it. Then it just dents a little...(yep, had that happen at the cabin...) I also love the look--very shed-like, don't you think?--and the sound of rain on the roof...

So life is good; got lots done, had wonderful coffee, sunshine, and quiet, got closeup photos of damselflies at the cabin, then I got to sit in the shed and listen to the rain. AFTER the white-out, buckets-of-rain downpour. (What's WITH this year, anyway??)

J's off to the grocery store and to stop by a Legion function, and I'm taking my Shandy, my journal, and my book to the shed...

  1. Oh, it's getting more wonderful by the moment! I love the idea of the metal roof, too. I remember your telling me about hearing raindrops on the metal roof at your and H's farm years ago and getting all excited because you'd had a long drought. And then the rain stopped. Well, here's hoping you get as much rain as you need from now on and no more. Until then, please send me some. We're having ANOTHER hot, dry spell!
Wouldn't a skylight be fun? You could look up through the trees at the stars!
I know I'm not the only one getting lots of vicarious joy in following your garden shed story, sweet Kate.

  2. Hi babe! Yes, I remember that well...and fooey, thought you were getting rain now! I'd love a skylight, but not sure how well that would work with the raised-seam metal roof.

And we just had a lovely afternoon...the deluge stopped, it was MUCH cooler, we had our drinks and books out there...

I LOVE the smell of new lumber, so I'm enjoying that while it lasts!

  4. Yes, lovely vicarious shed-building joy! That gully-washing thunder shower was lovely down here, too! I swear I could hear it on a metal roof!

  5. I was just going to mention how nice a skylight would be for your painting and I see Laura has beat me to it! It's looking fabulous already, and I know you'll enjoy that metal roof.

  6. If you can't have a skylight you can always put in a lot of lights in the ceiling so that you can draw and paint to your heart's content. I'm glad you got the metal roof on between storms. :)

  7. Thanks all! Rita, it's not QUITE on...unfortunately there's still a gap at the ridge. That part was at Mark's place; we tend to get a puddle on the floor, so I'm thinking that linoleum is the way to go, after all. We already have moisture-damaged floor at the cabin!

And yes, I'd LOVE a skylight...maybe an afterthought/add-on, later, if it turns out to be feasible.

  8. Malinda, you'll have to come up and see it one of these days! (I don't think any of the rest of you are in the neighborhood!)

  9. I am enjoying seeing it come together for sure but my question on this post is: What is a shandy?

I want skylights that open up. We get hot wind all day long and the house finally heats up till we need the air conditioner on a lot of summer days. The wind stops once dusk arrives and that's when we could use it. If we could open a couple of windows in the roof all the hot air would flow out and we'd cool off so nicely.

  10. How exciting!! I've been out of town and you've just about got that place ready to move in! You guys sure know how to get something done!!! Congratulations!

  11. Thanks, both of you...Timaree, that sounds like it would be wonderful. SOME sort of vent, anyway (we have roof vents here at the house that I'm sure help some.)

Basically, a shandy is beer and lemonade. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but the icy lemonade makes it lovely! Recently we found canned shandys, and they're not as good as home made (not lemony enough) but still refreshing!
