In case you were wondering...

In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

The shed and nature

As a writer of natural history and a lifelong observer of nature, one of the most important aspects of this little building was getting me OUT there where I could see.  There's that big French door, the big window next to my desk that looks out on the bird feeder, and the view through the North door.  Can't tell you how many times I've watched the squirrels run across the top of  my fence or rocket through the big trees up the street!

So here's a gallery of vignettes, bits and pieces of nature in my small sanctuary...

Yellow leaves in the fall...

Leaves on the deck...

The new bird feeder is attracting visitors...cardinals, sparrows, finches, juncoes, titmice, chicadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers...

Busy squirrel burying nuts...

Love that late afternoon light in the fall...

We topped up the shed when we put up the roof beam with a young cedar from our old cabin...

Dayflower and visitor...

Summery path to the alley--GREEN, wasn't it!

Back fence at our house next door...

The view of the top of the shed, over the back fence...like a jungle, isn't it!

Echinacea in my old raised bed behind the shed.

Wild Sweet William...

Looking up the alley toward the street--it dead ends, so no one uses this part of the alley but us...

A baby oak tree near the NE corner

Jewelweed across the alley...

Dead Cicada...and ants, ick!

The male cardinal and his mate had a nest in the wild honeysuckle by the fence...fun watching them...

Soft maple samaras on the deck...

Japanese Umbrella mushrooms disappear before the day fully warms...tiny little things!

Old Man's Beard across the alley...a cloud of white!

Not sure what this moth was...

Joe Pye Weed, I think....

The shed at night...pretty...

Wild honeysuckle...they're taking over!  Gorgeous, though...

Sketching that gorgeous cardinal...

Pokeweed...pretty but poisonous to humans...

Gooseberry by the fence...definitely NOT poisonous!

One of the visiting squirrels!
