In case you were wondering...

In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

Site plan

...for those who have tried to figure out where the bathroom should be! You can see where we live (the center rectangle with the sidewalk going straight in, the former drug house we're rehabbing--highly intermittently--with the curved walk, and the tiny new shed at upper right on the vacant lot I bought when the house next door burned down. (There was talk of building an apartment building on that small lot, on a street where there is ALREADY not enough parking!)

The dotted line goes from the shed to the back door.

I forgot the back porches on both houses, siiigh...

And this is not to scale, at all! The houses are larger in relation to the shed, but oh well...I didn't want to count all those tiny squares!

You can click on the image to see it larger...

  1. That old drug house would make an awesome gallery- and maybe teaching rooms :)
You have definitely been able to take advantage of some well-timed vacant properties/land :)
    This looks fascinating!

  2. That was the original plan, Rachel! Not sure there's really enough room for teaching...the rooms are fairly small by today's standards, and they had to hold Joseph's stuff from Virginia. WILL have a gallery in the front two rooms, though...

He rescued me, with that drug house! It was sooooo awful living next door to the noise, violence and turmoil. It was cheap (not cheap ENOUGH, given the amount of damage!), and the silence over there really is golden.

  3. I can only imagine how bad it was :) But hopefully your dreams will be realised- and I am sure it will become a lovely gallery at least :)

  4. You wouldn't have a very far walk to get to the house to use the bathroom. It is sooo good that you were able to buy that old drug house. For so many reasons. But it will be nice to eventually have a gallery over there. Wow! Dreams coming true. They may come true a little slower as we get older, but what the heck! They are still thrilling! ;)

  5. I've been wondering about the studio shed's location since this project began. Looks fantastic!

  7. Rachel, it was unbelievable. Too gross to describe. And yep, it's so nice and quiet now...and the house looks 100% better!

Here's our House Rescue Flickr site...I didn't photograph some things! http://www.flickr.com/photos/9506220@N08/sets/72157602083833556/

And yes, Vicky, it may be almost done by the time you get home!

  9. Oh, lovely! I dropped a stitch, then! I knew you'd left your sketchbook, but thought you'd just gone to another town in Texas for a while...wheee! I'll have to get busy and plan a sketchcrawl, they've kind of fallen through the cracks while you were gone. (Guess we can't do without you!)
