In case you were wondering...

In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

Mark measuring the distance from the property line...

J. contemplating the tiny deck extension--probably thinking of sitting out there with a Guinness!

Mark went and got the first load of wood and laid out the framework on the ground, so we could see if we liked the location and position. Joseph's neater than I am and liked the idea of aligning with the property lines--hey, OK by me. I'd originally thought to have it a bit canted to the north, but the view's the same, from the double doors. OK, well, it will be, I mean.

We're waiting till DigRite comes to mark any remaining utilities before sinking any shovels in the ground, though!

  3. Actually, it takes Guinness to plan things, too...and thanks, both of you! I think we were lucky, Mark had some time between jobs; one he'd been waiting on fell through (he's self-employed like me) so we inherited the time slot. *G*

  5. It's funny, I never felt the need for a separate studio, but a retreat/hideaway? OH yeah.

  6. I love the way you're documenting this process. It should be interesting!

  7. Thanks, Raena--I tend to document everything--I have photos of the first rehab project on our house, which I bought in 1977, but I never made a blog about this kind of thing before!

  8. Wow, you guys are fast workers! My husband works quickly like this. He decided to turn our carport into a garage and then after that was done he decided to add a third shed type stall onto it. My son-in-law, an engineer wondered just how he was going to do it. His youngest daughter said "Grandpa will just start and do it" and that's just what he does. A quick sketch, a trip to Home Depot and we've got a third stall. I got to mix the cement for the floor by hand, lucky me.

Can't wait to see more pics. This is much more fun to watch than to do and a retreat is more fun than a garage!

  10. Not quite as fast as it looks, really--I started thinking about this late last summer, noodling around, looking at pictures, thinking about what was needed and what we had on hand. We've got some materials left from the rehab job, including beadboard that will probably end up on the ceiling! We've got an old door that needs rehabbing...badly...*G*

And you're right, it IS more fun than a garage! I've mixed cement, too, ICK.
