In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

Early Inspirations--Handmade Houses

Years ago in a galaxy far away...well, really, it was just the 1970s...I bought a  copy of this book and fell in love.  We didn't build our farmhouse, in the 70s, but I definitely was influenced in how I rehabbed and decorated it!  Wonderfully quirky stuff, some soooo '70s and some I'd love right now. Beautiful carving, imaginative solutions, warm wood... Handmade Houses is still available for a reasonable amount (unless you want one of the hardbound "new" ones some optimist has listed for $900+!!)

If you love the idea of creating your own space, you'll love this old-but-still-good book!

  1. I got that same book at the same time. It still has a place in my house building books on the shelf. Some things are a bit dated, but the concepts are as good today as they ever were. I'm glad to see another one is still out there being appreciated!

  2. Yes, it was as much fun as ever to read! Do you have Rolling Homes, too? I really wanted to do that, after we left our back-to-the-land farm in the late 70s...

  3. A good friend has a copy of Rolling homes, so I can see it from time to time. I got a lot of inspiration from those intimate little dwellings in the pages of those books.
