In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

Chilly Shed Update

So...found a company to do the insulation under the floor, probably next week unless the weather goes completely wonky.  Almost $400, but it will save on electricity (and cranky, frozen Kate) in the long run.  The one that was going to call me on Monday 2 weeks ago never called, even after another contact, so I imagine how dependable they'd be to actually do the work.

(At this point, all but one of the rigid Styrofoam panels have let go and are lying on the ground under the shed.  Grrrr.)

Still planning to put a wool rug in there...this is the one I want, LOVE the Renaissance feel it has and soft sage green, but having trouble finding the owner of the booth to find out the PRICE.  Must be out of town...

Kinda like the goofy rooster, too...J. thinks I'm nuts, and it IS a lot darker than I'd planned to use in there.  I like checkerboard, though...and I KNOW how much this one costs (very affordable.)

I bought a cheap, small throw rug to put under the desk where I work, and the difference it makes is amazing.  Like between comfort and not.

Meanwhile the ground feeders and squirrels are much appreciating our bounty.  It was 45 degrees this morning, below freezing and snowing now...

And fooey, although it seemed as if the waterlogged board had FINALLY dried out and I put spar varnish on it, mentioned in THIS POST, this is now it looks now.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER USE RECYCLED MATERIALS THAT ARE NOT SOUND.

  1. Wow, is that board EVER going to work right? Have you looked at Homedecorators.com for rugs? Their prices aren't too bad depending on the size of the rug and they often have sales or free shipping.

Glad you are finally going to get the floor insulation fixed. Yes, it costs but you are right, so does the electricity to keep warm. You worked so hard to get this shed going to USE it so I hope it's comfy soon! It sure LOOKs comfy.

  2. So glad you are going to get that floor insulated! I like the first rug, too--but the rooster rug is fun if the other one doesn't work out. That first company sounds like they'd be dragging their feet on the work. Good you're going with the new folks. I bet the local critters are glad you want to watch them eat--hehe! :):)

  3. It gets comfy after a while, with two heaters running! So far, anyway...we have the little one set on a timer to come on at 6:30 am or so. By the time I get out there at 8 or 8:30, it's usually up to 37 to 49, depending on how cold it gets overnight. The other heater I turn on when I get there and it gets pretty comfortable within 20 minutes.

I'm just hoping if the weather gets TOO cold they'll still be able to do it! I should have just done this a month or more ago instead of waiting for something else to happen. (Like the original insulation to be fixed! *G*)

And yes, today I got to watch a flock of juncos! Such cute little birds...

I hadn't heard of homedecorators.com, but it would be hard to beat $30-$40 for a room-size rug!

  4. I really like all the rugs, but since I collect Chickens (and would love to have "real live ones,"
I have to go with the Rooster rug. It's cheerful, even if the background is very dark, the colorful roosters make it look great.

It's amazing to me that people who are in need of work don't show up to do it. A few years ago we wanted a concrete walk poured in the back yard. Guy came by, gave estimate, we waited and waited, never showed up to work. DH hired someone else who promptly showed up and had the work done in 2 days...the first guy shows up a couple of weeks after that and proceeds to cuss out my husband for having someone else do the work, knowing how badly he needed the work...the nerve!

  5. If I went with the chickens I'd have to TOTALLY give up my original simple/elegant concept. Of course the flowered chair pretty much shot that already. :-D

And yes, I've had that happen a LOT. A LOT over they years. Weird, isn't it! I had a guy get upset with me once when I finally hired someone else to do something he had been supposed to do a month or so before. Too bad...

  6. All I can say, Ms. Kate, is you're made of sterner stuff than I ever will be. I'm about to freeze today, in Florida, and it's in the 50's outside and 70 inside!

    Lovin' your shed!!

  7. I'm just acclimated to it, I think! 70 is TOO warm for me, indoors anyway. It's all in what you're used to...
