In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

Floor paint

We've decided that for now, since they don't make my favorite pattern of vinyl flooring any more and we've spent almost enough on this project, we'd go with paint right on the plywood floor.  It's a bit rough, but then so is the floor in our 110+-year-old houses.

We looked at a variety of vinyls, tiles, cork, etc., and even thought about using another layer of underlayment on the floor that would be smoother than the plywood--but maybe we're getting tired!  Just wanted done, and usable, and this was quickest.  If we decide on something later, we can always put it over the painted floor.

Soooo...Joseph just poured it direct from the can and spread it with a roller.  YEAH.  Instant serenity.

My stencils have gotten moved somewhere, so I'll either get more or find them, or make one just for this project, to add a decorative touch here...I think I'm too tired for anything very complex, and we'll be using rugs in winter, anyway.

I can haz in?

This is the end of the shed workday yesterday; visiting kitty Peppy can't understand why he can't go inside, as usual!

This morning while it was still decent outside, J. did the second coat, cutting in around the perimeter with a brush; the remaining gap will be covered with a simple baseboard.  (Knee pads helped with this step!)

Then he did the second coat like the first, with the roller, after smoothing some of the rougher spots that were easier to see once they had the first coat of paint on them.

I sat on the deck and supervised  er, sketched while he worked.

OH yeah.  Looking GOOD.  Love that morning light...

We're planning to keep it pretty simple and uncluttered inside...a shelf at the top of that far wall, the desk, a couple of chairs, wastebasket, shelves on the south wall for books and art supplies, the coffee/tea/water station next to the French doors on the south, heater and that's it.

For now.  :-P

  2. Hi Cathy,
Love your new studio on our "old property"! It's really fun to see how it has come altogether. You could tape the floor off and do a diamond pattern or checkerboard if you can't find your stencils. I would love to do this in our back yard. Rick and I built a nice size shed about 4 years ago, but it's for his motorcycle and garden supplies. I do have another spot that would be perfect though!

  3. Thank you, Cathy! It's right where your back yard used to be, beyond the back porch; after the house burned, we had a garden there for a year or two, until the trees grew up too much. Then we had a garden in two raised beds up closer to the street, where the house was--then the trees grew up too much! (Ours and our neighbors' so there's not much to be done about it.) I had the big old box elder tree at the front of the lot cut down a few years ago when it got rotten, thinking it would give us back some sun, but it wasn't enough to do any good.

So now it's sort of an urban wilderness and the perfect place for the new studio! You can't even see it from the street, in summer.

I thought about doing something like that on the floor--painting, etc.--but since Joseph has a cool old rug/carpet that he moved with him from Virginia that will work well, there's not much point in doing too awfully much. Rug will be NICE in winter. It's about 5 x 7, so not too much floor left to show.

I'd love to see what you'd do in that lovely back yard of yours!

  4. I am all for Paint In A Pinch, Kate. When I was 20 and adventuresome, I moved into a cold water flat near Greenwich Village in New York City. Floors pretty bad so I just painted them the color of NYC soot and we were off! Joseph's rug sounds perfect and I am so in love with morning light.

  6. Oh Kate! This is looking just more and more scrumptious!! Love the colors. Baseboard will really finish it off. Can hardly wait to see the shelves and furniture--just like your little neighbor, I want in! ;)

  7. I can't wait either, Rita! This has been an amazing experience and a real gift, but BOY it's been tiring, too. I just want to sit in it and stare off into space for about a month! :-D

  8. Floor: You should check out the industrial rubber tiles! They look amazing, soft on the feet but hard enough for living, they just lay on the floor so if one gets damaged you replace the single tile and no slipping if it gets wet!

Alternative is using sisal squares! http://www.sisalrugs.com

  9. Oh how funny...you wrote tiles and I read "TIRES." I'll have to check into that later, thank you! I had sisal once, years ago, and it got damp and STUNK. I'm sure that doesn't happen often, but it sure cured me!
