In case you were wondering...

In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

Details...

I mentioned the other day about things that bugged us...for me, it was the visible electrical box...ugly!  Hence hanging the painting over it, for now...

It drove Joseph nuts when it looked like this for so long, with the big yellow wires...

And I finally got the last of the spar varnish on the wood (except for that darn damp board), even though the new "satin" finish doesn't match the OLD "satin."  Oh well...it was lovely to get the foggy plastic the door came with peeled off, after the varnish dried, and the glass cleaned! Took a whole lot of paper towels...

Wow. We can see OUT.

It took 3 layers of oil-based spar varnish, but the wood is well-protected now.

Except for the damp board, of course...

Then the other night Joseph fixed the stationary door so it opens and closes better...

The little bits of progress are fun, too...

  1. Details bother me, too. But then I do have OCD tendencies--hehe! ;)

    It is looking lovely!

  2. I think I probably do too, Rita! Funny, once we got the desk in there, I relaxed a LOT. Still a lot to do, but that seemed to be some kind of a key.

  3. I've been on vacation and haven't kept up with anything. Your art shed is looking great. What about making a wooden door for over the electrical box - one that can be painted like a fairy door or maybe even another leaf man or just yellow to match the walls?

  4. Yep, just what I really want! Actually, I think J. is going to make a very shallow cabinet with a door on it, so I can tuck things into it. I think it'll be white, really--still going for that simplicity, but not trying to hide it altogether.

  5. Any idea when you can actually call the project "finished"...or does that word even exist when applied to home improvement projects?

We remodeled our kitchen about 15 yrs ago now, it had to be the most stressful thing I've ever done...nearly ended up in divorce court over it. Couldn't agree on anything, fought over the most minute, trivial things. We were 4 weeks with a gutted kitchen, no water there, nothing but bare walls and a bare floor. Once it was finished we both loved it and still do. I've not heard you mention any friction between you & J...how's the emotional/mental aspect of this going?

  6. Oh, there's the ugly electrical box photo, missed it during my earlier comment. I can see why it bugged you. Good idea to build a little hidey hole cabinet to stick things into.

  7. I think I had shot around that box, it really did bother me! Especially since the whole electrical issue became so complex and contradictory. We got told SO many different things...

I felt a LOT more finished when he brought the desk over and I could work comfortably...but I think the shelves will really be the turning point for me. Everything else is just details, mostly, at least till cold weather.

Of course we need to finish the insulation under the floor AGAIN, since it's falling off, bit by bit.

And sure, everybody has varying opinions on things--mine are usually pretty strong! I've made a few mentions of those times, here and there. I get tired of discussing things, 'cause I lived alone for 11 years and just decided and then did. Since he's had some terrific ideas and has made this whole thing happen in the first place, I try not to be TOO rigid! :-D
