In case you were wondering...
This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.
It helps if you're handy, too.

More noodling and planning...bookshelves-to-be
Thinking about how to fit the bookshelves in the shed, and what configuration we want...I did the original sketch at top right in my journal, then made a couple of flaps I could flip down with different designs. J says the water crock, just to the left of the bookshelves here, can go up on the table at left. That makes more room for bookshelves and art supplies...
Still haven't decided...but here's plan two, wider with closed storage at the bottom. (J. doesn't like this one as well...)
Plan 3 offers the most storage room, I think...
And speaking of shelves, J. got the little under-eave extension up yesterday! Great use of otherwise wasted space.
There will be some Shaker pegs on the bottom support, for coats, jackets, art supplies, whatever. Because of the angle of the roof, I could only put very small things up there...now even the tea caddy fits without risk of landing on the floor.
Cool!

Hmmmm. Tough choice. I like the idea of closed storage at the bottom of the book shelves. Be careful not to crowd yourself out at your work station. One needs elbow room :)
ReplyDeleteYep, it is. I like the closed storage too, not sure why J. doesn't! But yeah, the shelves won't be very deep so my elbows will still have room. :-P
ReplyDeleteIf you are going to have doors make them sliding so that you don't have to get out of the way of an open cabinet door.
ReplyDeleteI know if my table were under a shelf like that, I would need to install a light over it or I'll be working in a shadow. :)
Oh, I'll bet you meant on the cabinet, right? Never mind.*G*
ReplyDeleteI think I agree with Joseph: no doors on lower shelves. Easier to grab what you need without hassle -- maybe some squared baskets on lower shelves to stash stuff and still look neat?
ReplyDeleteHow deep are the shelves...I like the basket idea suggested by Vicky...nothing closed in. What's the little red thing hanging above the window? Having all the refreshments in one place sounds like a plan to me, that water jug looks very low, like you'd have to get on your knees to get a glass filled up...
ReplyDeleteCan you turn your desk around to where you're looking at the french doors? Is there enough floor space for that? Then your shelves would be at the back and you'd be able to look outside. Just a thought. How many steps from the shelves to the doors? Do the doors open to the inside or out? Joan
Hi Joan! Yes, I like that, too...gotta have some closed storage, though, there are some things I just don't like looking at.
ReplyDeleteThe red thing is one of my own greenman sculptures, when I was doing pottery. He's terracotta. It's this little guy--he got broken, so he stayed home! http://www.flickr.com/photos/9506220@N08/1411466247/in/set-72157602083832596/ He got embellished a bit, with terracotta leaves,too...
Maybe 4 steps to the doors, which open in. They would have hit the roof overhang if they opened out. Mostly, we just open the one.
I'd originally planned to have the desk facing the other way, but it works better this way. I can still look out, I discovered my head turns just fine.<:-P LOTS more room this way, and really it's kind of nice not being distracted when I really want to work. Then I look out the window for a break.
The shelves aren't going to be deep, maybe 8", so not a lot of room for baskets. I need wooden shoeboxes, maybe! :-)
Vicky, how weird! I'd answered you, and it appears to have disappeared, sorry. As I said to Joan, the shelves aren't going to be very deep, so finding a squarish basket only 8"or so may be a bit of a challenge! Good idea, though...I sketched some bowls and baskets on the shelves because I like it too!
ReplyDeleteHobby Lobby sells all sizes and shapes of baskets that nest inside each other that can be purchased separately. I have a tall one that is only 7" wide. Hides the unsightly stuff but open enough to grab what I want.
ReplyDeleteThanks, girl! I'll bet Michaels does too, then (we've got one of those closer.)
ReplyDeleteKate: Maybe Joseph could whip you up some wooden "shoe" boxes? Or how about those small orange crate wooden boxes I've seen at Michael's? They could be stained or oiled with Tung oil, natural looking. I'd suggest the clear, see thru boxes made of plastic, but I sense that you want "natural" containers. Don't blame you.
ReplyDeleteJoan
Thanks, Joan! I'd forgotten about those, too...
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, you're right. I have plastic tubs at home and I'm tired of them! *G* Very practical but not very Zen.
They (little crates)would look nice painted in bright colors to match the decor of the shed...I'm sure you'll come up with something just right for the room.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joan, it seems to suggest things to me as we go along, so I'm sure you're right!
