...make serenity a bit hard to come by. I am so angry.
This was there yesterday. It isn't, now. Last night someone apparently thought it was fine, if they wanted it, to just take it. Apparently their lives are so devoid of beauty they thought it was all right to steal some.
At least nothing else was taken.
After having the basement next door broken into a few months back, and then a year or two to lose light fixtures and all the new copper pipes in the rehab project, and my garden shed broken into, padlock cut with a bolt cutter and both chain saws stolen--among other things (and not to mention the vandalism at the cabin)--I'm ready to chew nails, today. And not fingernails.
I KNOW it's "just stuff." But we work hard for our money; we earn it; we share it when we feel so led. Stealing is not earning, and I prefer to make my own decisions about what to give away.
Needless to say nice peaceful meditation did NOT happen this morning.
In case you were wondering...
In case you were wondering...
This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.
It helps if you're handy, too.

I'm so sorry, Kate! This angers me too.
ReplyDeleteI had a small hand=blown glass hummingbird feeder that was a "special get-away with Bill" memory. Stolen. Also, my favorite herb pot (hard-to-find style), a hanging basket with hand-made frame, even plants out of our planters. These are things that belong outside . . . so the orc-minded just help themselves. Grrrrrr!!!
OMG! I just don't understand people! That makes me so sad. You haven't even finished all your decorating! There sure seems like a lot of crime in your area. How frustrating! I can see why it would be hard to meditate when you've just been ripped off. So sad for you!! :(
ReplyDeleteI HATE orcs. I'd been fairly careful about what I put outside, because of previous experience (including yours, Miss Vicky!), but that silly thing brought me an inordinate amount of pleasure. Made me smile every time I looked at it.
ReplyDeleteRita, we do live in a depressed part of town, but usually the thieves go elsewhere--where the money is--or used to.
I am so sorry, Kate. I feel not only sad for you and angry at the vandals, but I feel even more our vulnerability in an age when some people will go to extraordinary lengths to break into places where there is no money or expensive possessions. It stands in such contrast to the kindness and concern and helpfulness of most people around us.
ReplyDeleteannie
It does, Annie, and I try hard to concentrate on that. Somehow negatives have a larger impact than they deserve.
ReplyDeleteKate, I am SOOOO sorry this happened. I'd be chewing nails and spitting them out "aimed where it hurts!"
ReplyDeleteI can think of all sorts of real nasty booby traps -- bet you can too! Do you have a neighborhood watch program?
We used to, Brenda, but it's not active any more--too much changeover in neighbors, I think. I'm wondering about a loud alarm, anyway...
ReplyDeleteoh Kate!!! I feel so bad for you and Joseph. ok I'm going to ask the Angels to put a line of protection around you and your property. I would feel just like you. hugs coming.
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate that, Toni! Lousy timing, huh!
ReplyDeletePardon my ignorance, but what are "orcs"?
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry thieves took your pretty gazing ball. I have never understood stealing or vandalism. I think a series of trip lines that would activate an alarm or lights is called for. So sad for the damper this has cast on your day. Even if it's just "stuff"...it's your stuff that held memories & brought you pleasure. Pox on the thieves.
Thank you, Joan...Orcs are the heedless, selfish, cruel creatures in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. I often refer to vandals, etc. as Orcs.
ReplyDeleteWe have a security light, apparently that didn't deter them in the least. I think an alarm would be nice...
It just keeps happening doesn't it? Why do people think this is okay to do to other people? I just don't understand it. A gazing ball is not something they can get any money for so why take it? I feel really bad for you.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about this. I worry about the same thing happening at my cabin (two hours away). Just remember that serenity prayer you posted a few days ago.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes and warm regards.
Oh Kate, I am so sorry to hear about this. You and Joseph have worked so hard to make your Shed of Reality the perfect place for you and you have give so much pleasure in your 'telling of the tale'.
ReplyDeleteGrrr..... is nothing sacred anymore? Has humanity fallen so low? I understand these are hard times and crime will rise during these times, but people, have some decency, some dignity! I just don't understand the thieving mentality. Kate, so sorry this keeps happening to you.
ReplyDeleteThanks, all...it does upset me somewhat that it makes me think again about security, but in truth I never planned to keep anything out there of much value. The gazing ball wasn't, it was just so PRETTY. Not like anyone could get anything for it...I fully expected to see it smashed in the street nearby.
ReplyDeleteplease get a beagle as an alarm. theyre cute, smart, make a lot of noise when someone shows up,won't bite the kids, love leftovers, and make great footwarmers. also a outdoor trail camera used by hunters is motion activated, inexpensive, works day or night and mounted on a tree to blend in.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to, I grew up with beagles! Love them.
ReplyDeleteAnd interestingly, we had one of those after our break-ins at our old cabin. They climbed the tree and stole the camera.
