In case you were wondering...

In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

And the answer is YES...

My old studio lamp gave up the ghost when we were in the middle of shed-building, and J. asked if I needed one for out there.  Hey, I've got windows, a sunny day, white ceiling, a hanging Japanese lantern, and the cool little antique desk lamp...I said "I don't know...let's wait and see."

I waited.  I see.  The answer is YES.  Please.

I'm working on an illustration for Watercolor Artist, and the existing light just isn't sufficient for artwork.  Working in the journal, yes, sure.  Reading, no problem.  REAL work, um, no.

So he ordered me this one, which looked as close as we could get to what I've always liked, and it's more affordable than the more futuristic "studio lighting."

You can see more about it here..it's the ALVIN Combination Task Light   Looks like it will do exactly what I'm used to, with warm and cool light combined.  And y'know, I just like that drafting-lamp look!

  1. Good looking lamp and should do the job for you.

On another topic: Have you ever worn UGG boots, the sheepskin lined ugly boots? They are not pretty but boy are they warm. Just sayin'.

  2. Thanks, Joan...yep, I've got a pair of faux Uggs, couldn't swing the real thing, but they're leather and sheepskin lining. Thanks for reminding me!

  3. I have always needed bright light to work on projects or write, so I fully understand needing good lighting. I hope this lamp works out really well for you. The advantage of that lamp, especially with limited space, is that it won't take up room on the table, either. ;)

The warm boots is a great idea, too. :)

  4. Hi Rita! I'd worked on the dining room table for so many years--where I DO have a light like that, and share it with Joseph (that's where his computer is) that I'd forgotten how it was without one! I think I might even be able to attach the lamp to one of the new shelves, which would be good. That IS a small desk, but that's what I needed for a small shed. ;-P

  5. It DOES look like a nifty lamp! I'm so impressed with how resourceful you are about the appointments and furnishings in your little haven. Now, if you can just keep your feet warm.... ;D.

  6. Hi Miss Laura! I had thought I'd just move the one over from my office, but discovered it had died on me! It was one that has a clamp with a peg in it, so it was a two-piece setup, anyway--those have a limited application. Looks like the Alvin just has a clamp, so I should be able to use it vertically or horizontally...

I much prefer being resourceful, thank you! I'm amazed at how we can reuse things in different ways and they're perfect.

And I just found a pair of silly Nordic-print polar fleece knee-highs that are going to work VERY well till we solve the insulation problem! :-)

  7. Nice lamp. I know I can use all the light I can get.

  8. Yep, I guess I need it too! I wasn't judging the color well at all...

  9. I can't bear cold feet. If feet are cold I'm cold all over. The nordic print fleece get up should work well...and the fleece is made from re-cycled plastic bottles...not as warm as wool, but if those work who cares what they look like. At this stage of the game, comfort ranks first above fashion.

  10. I can't either, Joan! I'd found these in a thrift store for 50 cents a couple of years ago, they'll be great out there. PLUS J. just found my extra heating pad, so I'll use that instead of a pet bed or other expensive option underfoot.
