In case you were wondering...

In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

Lloyd Kahn's latest book--Tiny Homes: Simple Shelters--we're IN it!

I remember Lloyd's earlier books from the Whole Earth Catalog days and beyond...I still OWN a couple of first editions!  When he asked if I'd be interested in sharing the shed in his latest project, "no" wasn't even an option.

Click the link above to see much, much more, or pre-order it...I got my contributor's copies yesterday, and it's WONDERFUL.  1300+ photos of delightful dwellings, sheds, boats, wagons and more...

Here's the shed's spread...

the south wall as it looked when I sent in the photos...
And a year later...it's filled up a tad, with books, art supplies, storage and such...

  2. Obviously the man knew whom to turn to for substantive content. Congratulations on setting the benchmark!

  3. Thanks, you two! Pablo, there are SO MANY wonderful little shelters in this book! Normally I just look at the pictures, but I find myself reading every word.

Mine is an advance copy, not sure when the bookstores will have it, but I HIGHLY recommend it!

  4. Kate,

Thanks for your blog post. TINY HOMES: SIMPLE SHELTER will be available in the bookstores in 2weeks. We could REALLY use reviews posted on Amazon.com, BN.com, and Goodreads.com if you enjoyed the book.

  5. I'll be HAPPY to do so, Lew! It's an amazing book, and looking forward to the sequel! (I'm tempted to send you photos of my original cabin, built 20+ years ago!)

  7. Thanks for sharing, Cathy. Love your shed and photos of your artwork. I would love to build a shed just like yours if I had the space. I would also install a tiny wood stove from Fatsco. Check them out if you're still cold!

  8. Gulland, thanks! It's a terrific book!

And Jesmed, I hadn't seen those stoves, cute. We're warm enough now, especially since we got the floor insulated. Any stove we put in would have to be UL approved our our insurance wouldn't cover us, do these qualify?

  13. Hi Cathy,
I just found this book yesterday. It's on my wish list. Your article really touched me. My mother in law has dementia and seeing my husband so grim hurts really bad. I so related to you on that. I love your art space. The one you built 20 years ago is my dream space.

    Hugs,

    Diana

  14. Diana, it's got to be one of the most difficult things EVER to live through. My sis has a similar condition, though she's mostly cute and pleasant--still very hard on everyone. And I still love my old cabin, though it needs some work! It's a lot harder for me to get to, now that I'm 20+ years older and my arthritis doesn't like for me to walk to it when the weather's too bad to use the drive...
