In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

Night Light...

The lighting is working well, though perhaps not quite enough for doing art at night (WONDERFUL for kicking back and reading though--that was a terrific evening).  May still have to go for a studio light for work...

We found an inexpensive little cubby the other day, exactly the right size to cover the electric box.  J. painted it white, and now it holds a variety of small things--hand microscopes, magnifying glasses, matches, salt, and one of my wee gargoyles, among other things...

Still need one by the desk, but this was too perfect...

  1. Lighted windows feel so cozy and inviting when one is out walking in the dark.

I would surely need a studio light, and the electric box camouflage is perfect. Those boxes are one of the tech things that really irritate my eye-- but then, so is the blasted TV. I am still looking for an attractive cabinet.

  2. They do, don't they Annie. This particular one bugged both of us! Not only was it ugly to begin with, it was a symbol of all the frustration we had with city codes and the varying and conflicting opinions about what we had to do. This not only camouflages, but it's practical. More storage!

  3. Nothing like a beckoning light in the dark! It looks so cozy in there. I'd probably need a couple of lights over the art table and a reading lamp. My eyes aren't good--hehe!

Lovely little cubby! Perfect fit once again. :)

  4. Well, sometimes I cook there, Paul, but I also use it in watercolor washes to make texture. Gotta have salt!

  5. And Rita, you're right! It is cozy...I can use the little lamp on the desk for now, both for art and reading, but it's a little harsh...

  6. What an excellent shed and you can never have too many microscopes!

  7. Thank you, Andy! Indeed you can't. I love the macro world...those portable hand microscopes are a wonder. Pollen grains, butterfly wings, all kinds of fascinating things suddenly visible.

  9. Perfect solution to the ugly elec. box! The night shot is so inviting, so cozy looking.

Kate: salt will also keep the Vampires away, you might put some garlic up there too, just for good measure.

  10. Joan, I couldn't believe it when I saw the shape and size. It might have been made to cover the box! I'll keep that in mind about the vampires, thank you, and we ALWAYS have garlic. *G*

  11. It's amazing how serendipitous your finds have been for the play house, the step stool was made to measure perfect, and now this little shelf/cubby!

Just an FYI..found this tip in one of the financial newsletters I get: Instead of using pesticides for bug spray one of the readers uses Lysol unscented or scented...kills the critters deader than dead! I have to try this out...can't do the chemicals/poisons.

Can't find the link to your eBay store...want the Nooldlers Ink in dark brown or sepia. Do you have it?

  12. Well, good tip, thank you! Garlic repels moquitoes, too...

I don't have it up yet, sorry! Probably not for a bit...the link's here, though: http://stores.ebay.com/Kates-Treasures

  13. It sure looks like home now! All the little touches have really changed it from a shed to a living space. You both have done a great job.
