In case you were wondering...

In case you were wondering...

This blog exists to encourage all those who have ever wanted--and needed!--a tiny getaway close to home. A workshop, playhouse, garden shed, sanctuary, mini-greenhouse, studio, home office; whatever it is you need, it IS doable, with some sacrifice, imagination, and compromise.

It helps if you're handy, too.

More Tiny Houses

I've updated my Flickr set of Wee Small Houses again, for those who enjoy these things!  We just got back from Nevada, where we visited Mt. Charleston and Old Town again.  Love all the tiny houses, the variety, the styles, the colors...

So you can see the newest additions here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cathy-johnson/sets/72157614254725880/ .  A lot of these were for sale, so if your dream is to own a tiny getaway, you may want to check these out.  Mt. Charleston is lovely...

And a new tiny house builder for those of you in the California area: http://customcabins.wordpress.com/

  1. That one really catches my eye, Kate. They are not only fun, but they always take me back to my childhood when I was just as fascinated by them as I am now. During WW2, when I was 10 years old, we lived in Long Island, and at our railroad station there was a little house by the road where a man stayed who took care of the crossing. He had a tiny coal stove in there and I spent a lot of time decorating the place in my mind so I could live in it... Even window boxes...My head just kept on with it for the rest of my life whenever I saw a tiny place.

  2. Me too, Annie! We always stayed in tiny tourist cabins in the mountains or at the lake and I never wanted to come home...

  3. Well because of you, I am dreaming of living in a Tumbleweeds tiny house someday. My husband doesn't like the idea but I do. So into my dream journal it goes along with what to put in it plus colors - thinking about turquoise with a dark blue roof and red door and windows. Bright! Too bright for a big house but fun to me, for a tiny one!

  4. I live 25 mins away from Mt. Charleston. Old town in so quaint...did you get photos of the old water tower near the fire station? I would love to live up there in the summer to get out of the heat, they can have it in the winter tho.

  5. Timaree, should I apologize? *G* Those ARE really cute, and I think your colors would be fun!

Joan, how cool! I didn't take a photo of the water tower this time, but did last time. Wonder where I parked that?

  6. I thought sure you'd want to paint/draw the water tower. In the hotel closest to the bottom of the mountain, the one near the abandoned golf course, inside the restaurant a watercolorist, I'm assuming he's local, had his very lovely paintings hanging.

Years ago, Mt Charleston had a saw mill in operation. Can't remember when it closed. Nevada has a very interesting history.

  7. Yep! Truthfully, I wish I'd shot another photo of it! I DO want to sketch it, there's just not a good place to park right there. :-)

I wonder where the sawmill was...and yes, Nevada's got all kinds of cool stuff. My brother in law took me to a little ghost town near Henderson once, I've gotten some neat paintings there...
